Project Overview

SCOTTSDALE, AZ

With new ownership and a rebrand as an Andaz (Hyatt) property, this sprawling resort underwent a complete renovation of its 185 bungalow-style rooms and suites, and the addition of a new lobby restaurant, event center, meeting rooms, fitness center and spa, all on a tight budget and during monsoon season.

Sustainable Red Mangaris (Indonesian hardwood) was used for the exterior elements – the vertical wood facade at the Lobby, on the Casitas, and at the convention space. We also used this material for the horizontal decking at the main pool, spa pool and presidential unit decks. In all, we used the same amount of lumber as a 100-gun ship would require –700,000 board feet.

Flexibility and communication were key as the team raced to reopen the property and create a revenue stream for the hotel.

Our Solution

Our Solution

PWI Construction served as general contractor on the Andaz Scottsdale and provided the full range of pre-construction, construction and post-construction services through the life of the project. PWI Construction met with the owner and their representative weekly to review progress.

"At times, the pace of construction outpaced the design team," says project lead David Mueller, who was constantly looking for cost savings and added value. The bungalows were taken down to their shells and a slab, requiring a total renovation/rebuild of the guest rooms and bathrooms, and then new facilities were constructed on the 23-acre property.

"One of my favorite memories was the opening of the event center. We worked about 20 straight days, crazy hours, to get the event building done in time for an event they had already sold and planned. Right after we finished, I was up on an elevated patio next to the building and I looked down. There were a dad and his sons playing football on the lawn outside, using the space and enjoying it. Seeing that space we worked so hard on being enjoyed made it all worth it," Mueller adds.

Client Story

ANDAZ SCOTTSDALE RESORT & BUNGALOWS
Rall Elder was the Chief Engineer for the Andaz during the rebranding and renovation project.
“Working with the team from PWI was like being in a brotherhood,” says Elder. “It felt like family, like we were all in it together.” When the entire team was doing room punches before the hotel opening, they realized the project manager on the ownership side had missed some areas. David Mueller from PWI jumped in and made sure everything was completed correctly, even though it wasn’t his responsibility. “He just took care of it,” says Elder. “They are great.”

The Team

Delawie Architects Architect
Delawie Architects imagined the renovated resort as “desert modern” retreat, inspired by midcentury modern architecture. The guest rooms and suites were configured in clusters of casita-inspired bungalows.
EDG Design Designer
EDG Design was inspired by the 1950s desert art scene influenced by architects, artists and graphic designers, including Alexander Girard, Frank Lloyd Wright and Paolo Solari. The rooms and grounds at the Andaz Scottsdale are a reflection of their creative spirit; color, line and form all commingle and work in harmony with the natural surroundings.
Testimonial
