Women in Construction Employee Spotlight: Meet Laura

This week marks Women in Construction Week (March 4-10, 2018) hosted by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). The focus of the observance is to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry and raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.
In recognition of Women in Construction Week, it’s our honor to introduce you to a few of the women making it happen at PWI Construction.
Women in Construction Spotlight: Meet Laura
Laura is located at our corporate headquarters in Las Vegas and has been with PWI Construction since 2014. We sat down with Laura to learn more about how she got into the construction field and her day-to-day life.
How many years have you been in the construction industry? What role(s) have you held? What are you responsible for in your current role?
I have worked in the construction industry for fourteen years. Over the years, I have held several positions such as administrative assistant/purchasing assistant, project engineer, office engineer, project manager and currently as a project coordinator.
As a project coordinator, I work closely with project managers, subcontractors and ownership. Within this role, I compile, edit and process subcontractor agreements, project buyouts and any financial data, process general invoices and subcontractor pay applications for approval and payment, prepare all change order requests and send to owner for approval, prepare and issue all subcontractor change orders, prepare monthly owner AIA billings, process weekly project reports. Enter all invoices for payment and ensure that they have proper approval and coding. Maintain all project insurance and ensure that all subs have the proper requirements, set-up the project documents and update throughout the project and hold start-up meeting for each project. Maintain project files, request and obtain all close-out documents. Ensuring that clients’ needs are met throughout the project and involved in coordinating projects from inception to completion. I am currently working in Procore on a few projects as part of our implementation of this new project management software to see how it will work best with PWI Construction’s procedures by providing input and a working system.
Why did you enter into construction? What do you enjoy most about what you do?
I entered the construction industry while I was going to college full time for my degree in Business Management and worked as an administrative assistant with a construction company. From that point, it just stuck with me. I was always given opportunities to advance within and worked with amazing people along the way that were able to teach me different facets of the construction industry.
I work with great people and am constantly learning new things all the time. It’s great to be on a project team and take part of some amazing projects and to be able to see the progress and then the incredible outcome.
